John P. Obermiller, MD

President & Medical Director

Dr. John P. Obermiller is president and medical director of Medical Equation Inc. based in Austin, Texas. He co-founded the company in 1996 as one of the first utilization management services companies in the country, and he has served as a medical director since the company’s inception. Dr. Obermiller, his partners and his co-medical directors, Dr. Brian C. Buck and Dr. Peter M. Garcia, form the Medical Equation leadership team, supervising over 50 doctors who represent more than 30 specialties.

Dr. Obermiller is board-certified with the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a fellow of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He co-founded Texas Orthopedics Sports and Rehabilitation Associates in 1986 in Austin. A practicing physician for more than 25 years, he maintains a private practice in Austin and is a medical staff member at several Austin-area hospitals.

Dr. Obermiller is a Texas Division of Insurance Division of Workers’ Compensation Designated Doctor and has held that designation since 1993. With over 25 years in the workers’ compensation and liability claims field, he is a leading expert in compensability evaluation based on the Official Disability Guidelines (ODG). Dr. Obermiller provides expert testimony for contested case hearings and is a sought-after speaker and lecturer. He regularly conducts Texas Department of Insurance certified continuing education courses, which cover an array of utilization review topics.

He is licensed in the states of California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

After serving in the United States Marine Corps as an airborne C-130 transport navigator, Dr. Obermiller received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in geology from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his doctorate in medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas, and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Obermiller is an avid outdoorsman and hunting enthusiast.

Brian C. Buck, MD

Medical Director

Dr. Brian C. Buck is a medical director for Medical Equation Inc. in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1996, Medical Equation is one of the first utilization management services companies in the country. Dr. Buck, his partners and his co-medical directors, Dr. John P. Obermiller and Dr. Peter M. Garcia, form the Medical Equation leadership team, supervising over 50 doctors who represent more than 30 specialties.

Dr. Buck is board-certified with the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Board of Electro-Diagnostic Medicine. He is a Texas Division of Insurance Division of Workers’ Compensation Designated Doctor and a certified Medical Review Officer. Dr. Buck is also board-certified with the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review. He is licensed in New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.

Maintaining a private practice in Austin, Dr. Buck’s work includes workers’ compensation cases, electromyography, neuromuscular disease and inpatient rehabilitation. As a Medical Equation medical director, Dr. Buck supervises professional staff and procedures. Dr. Buck also serves as medical director for Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital in Kyle, Texas.

Dr. Buck received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas, and earned his undergraduate degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas.

Peter M. Garcia, MD

Medical Director

Dr. Peter M. Garcia is a medical director for Medical Equation Inc. in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1996, Medical Equation is one of the first utilization management services companies in the country. Dr. Garcia, his partners and his co-medical directors, Dr. John P. Obermiller and Dr. Brian C. Buck, form the Medical Equation leadership team, supervising over 50 doctors who represent more than 30 specialties.

Dr. Garcia is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has been in general orthopedic practice in Austin with Texas Orthopedic Sports and Rehabilitation since 1988 and is a medical staff member at several Austin-area hospitals. Dr. Garcia is a Texas Division of Insurance Division of Workers’ Compensation Designated Doctor. As a Medical Equation medical director, Dr. Garcia supervises professional staff and procedures. He regularly conducts Texas Department of Insurance certified continuing education courses covering an array of utilization review topics.

He is licensed in California, Colorado, Illinois, Mississippi, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Dr. Garcia speaks fluent Spanish and is a member of the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons and Hispanic Physicians of Austin. He received his doctorate in medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas. He completed his orthopedic residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and served in the United States Army based at Ft. Hood, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Texas at Austin.
